Specializing in Electrical Power, Controls & Instrumentation
Professional PLC programming and startup services include: Allen Bradley, Siemens, GE and Modicon systems. Having the ability to take the process documentation and methodically converting that to PLC code is something I take pride in. By creating clean code that is well documented, I do my best to "work myself out of a job"! Clear, concise and logical PLC code allows my client's in house technical staff to perform most support functions without feeling dependent on me.
I have also programmed DCS systems such as Yokogawa CS3000, Emerson DeltaV and a few other older systems. I began my programming at Johnson Controls (1992 - 1996) utilizing Johnson Controls Programming Language (JCPL). I had excellent mentors. that taught me organized programming techniques that have carried through my professional carreer.
(A particular thank you to Hasan Zaman ( linkedin.com/in/hasan-zaman-884a9324 ) and the rest of the team that worked for Johnson Controls - without you all or as they say in Texas, "Yall!" I would not be were I am today!)
SCADA and DCS graphics are something that requires an understanding of the process flow. Most of the time a good set of P&IDs and process documentation can get a programmer part of the way there. The other half is an understanding of the equipment being controlled and how to present that to the user in a useful manner!
I have programmed in Wonderware, Factory Talk View, Intellution, Cimplicity, Ignition and other smaller SCADA packages. My philosophy is the K.I.S.S. principal. This means, minimizing the scripting and VBA in the applications and utilizing the tools that the SCADA software provides. Most of these software packages were designed by Control Engineers and the tools provided cover 98% of what is needed to efficiently and effectively control the facility processes. DON'T MAKE IT COMPLICATED and you will have a good product and a happy client.
Startup is where it is all at! Having experience in process control is not only understanding the process but also listening to the equipment and observing trends to see if the process is being controlled properly. The picture to the left is a prime example of "listening" to the equipment. The pumps are controlled by VFDs and work in conjunction to meet flow requirements. I was standing next to the equipment and heard the pumps ramp up and then ramp down every 10 seconds. I realized that there was more tuning to be performed. The timing of the PID control loop was found to be "sloppy". too much dead-band and the execution rate needed to be adjusted to account for the flow control signal updates. This is were I really shine! I can get to the root of the issue(s) quickly by utilizing not only my skills but my senses and provide solutions to real world issues! Reducing downtime, process interruptions, identifying the real culprit or just improving the process to reduce the technical staff's "headaches" all while making friends as I go, is most important to me!
After I worked for Johnson Controls, I moved on to Camp Dresser and McKee (CDM), an engineering design firm in Dallas, TX. This is where I melded engineering design and DCS/PLC programming into a fully comprehensive understanding from paper to field. I was hired to start CDM's programming group, which also included the engineering design for the control systems. After the first few successful projects, CDM hired a good friend from Johnson and we worked together to finish other successful projects. CDM then hired our previous supervisor from Johnson Controls to expand the group even more. One of his first comments was, "I do not have much of a learning curve, since I taught both of you how to program!" We were a very successful team that has since expanded into a large group that is now based out of Phoenix, AZ. I m proud to have been a part of that successful endeavor and have continued with those experiences to were I am today with a great reputation and an excellent work ethic!
